HISTORY OF WFAX
WFAX 1220 AM serves America’s seventh largest radio market, reaching millions of residents in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland. WFAX was founded in 1948 and was the area’s first Christian radio station. Over the years it has maintained its commitment to providing quality Christian teaching and talk programming while expanding its reach to listeners. Its new FM signal at 100.7 serves listeners in northern Virginia, and its streaming service can be heard all over the world. WFAX’s continuing success demonstrates that radio still is a powerful and effective medium for proclaiming the Gospel of Christ.
WFAX was founded in 1948 by Lamar and Genevieve Newcomb, who opened a small office in northern Virginia, not far from Washington, D.C. Lamar, an electrical engineer, served as manager, and Genevieve, a music teacher and church soloist, served as program director. The Newcombs were able to increases their stations’ coverage,, allowing them to reach listeners in the entire metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. Today WFAX is still in the family, managed by their daughter Doris. The future of WFAX is as promising as the richness of its past in reaching Christians everywhere.
